Parents are welcome to observe our
classrooms. It will be immediately noticeable that our classrooms offer a rich array of specially designed materials and resources.
The materials and resources address and meet the wide range of interests, abilities and skills of the mixed-age groups working
in the Montessori prepared environment. The joyful pursuit of knowledge is obvious as it radiates from our students. The goal of PMEI is to provide an educational environment
that serves the whole child, where he/she can grow intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically. PMEI's focus in curriculum
is to provide high interest and strong challenge within a dynamic and experiential environment. Each student is educated using
an individualized plan developed by the teacher. This plan is based upon the child's demonstrated skills and abilities.
Our Curriculum is Divided
into Six Main Areas Skills and specific focus vary according to the age and developmental level of each student.
Basics: Reading, writing
and mathematics
|
|
Integrated: Geography, multi-cultural
studies, history, cultural philosophy, zoology, botany, earth science, physical science and basic chemistry
|
Physical Education: Perceptual-motor
development, gross motor skills and team building
|
Fine Arts: Music, art and
foreign language
|
Social Emotional: Intrapersonal
and interpersonal relationship skill building through character education
|
Multi-Age Classrooms To aid in the personalized education of the child,
we emphasize mixed-age groups. Within our classrooms, the child can be enriched both cognitively and socially at the level
that is comfortable for him/her.
Special Offerings Music: Our music class meets thirty minutes, once a week.
Music classes at PMEI will motivate children to build their musical and vocal skills. In an atmosphere of safety and nurturing,
students can sing and experience different kinds of music and vehicles of creating it. Music class is offered to students
enrolled in at least a 3 Half-Day program.
Library: Library is offered to our primary students once a
month. The children come into the library with their class to learn about library related topics: how to take care of a book,
how to check out a book, how to find books, and more. After each lesson a story time will follow. Each visit to the library
the students will select and check out a book to keep in their classroom library.
Spanish: The introductory Spanish Curriculum at PMEI will
instill in the beginning student a sense of enjoyment of the Spanish language as well as an appreciation for the Spanish culture.
Through games, songs, craft and art activities, the students will be exposed to the Spanish experience. Utilitarian Spanish
will be achieved through call and response activities, songs, rote memorization, and daily drilling. Spanish vocabulary will
be introduced and then built upon at higher levels in subsequent classes. Props used to teach and reinforce lessons at this
level include puppets, toys and popular music. Spanish Class is offered to Primary and Kindergarten aged children enrolled
in either a 5 Half Day or 5 Full Day program.
Physical Education The PE curriculum includes skills and concepts to
enhance physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. For example, we ask questions to encourage cognitive development,
encourage taking turns to enhance affective development, and work on colors by using colored bean bags, balls and hoops in
activities. Predominant teaching strategies involve movement exploration stations, guided discovery, and creative problem
solving. Our movement exploration stations provide children with choices, so that children can seek out the stimuli they need
to nourish their developmental abilities. Physical Education is offered to Primary and Kindergarten aged children who are
enrolled in at least a 3 Half-Day program.
